In class blog post oct. 24
Plagiarism, pparaphrasing correctly, copyright, open content, open access, and creative commons all share a similarity when it comes to library research. In the Library when you are looking up source to use on research, you should know the difference between copyright and plagiarism. If you don't know the difference you could be facing a lot of trouble you didn't mean to get into. Learning how to paraphrase correctly is a must! When writing a research paper, you can not just copy someone else's work online or your professor could give you a zero for your paper, you can be expelled or even worse have a law suit filed against you. There is somewhat of a difference between open content, open access and creative commons. Open access is completely open to users online, you can use their information without having to worry about citing them or asking for permission because the information is wide open.Open content is when authors license their work and give up some control to the viewers. Creative common is used but the creators can licences their work but must ask for attribution. This knowledge comes in handy with other classes such as English when writing a paper. You wouldn't want to fail your paper because you decided to plagiarise your work.

Your right it is essential for people to know the difference between all of these and i'm glad we learned about this in class because i have never heard of open access and open content before. It is also important everyone learns to cite and now plagiarise.
ReplyDeleteJust to be clear -- open content does NOT mean you don't have to cite your source. It means that you can do more with it than you can under normal copyright terms -- so you can make copies, develop derivative works, etc.
ReplyDeleteBut copyright and plagiarism are different issues: one has to do with what you can do with the work, the other has to do with giving credit.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS cite your source! Even if you're allowed to distribute copies or change it or whatever, failing to cite your source is plagiarism.
